Today we’re talking all things recruiters!

✔ What it’s really like to work with a recruiter
✔ What to expect when working with a recruiter and what NOT to expect
✔ We’re going to tackle some common misconceptions
✔ How to best use recruiters

All from the mouth of an actual recruiter!

My guest on the podcast today is my fellow LinkedIn content creator Biron Clark. Biron is a former recruiter who started his own website FULL of free resources and articles on all things career.

Now let’s get into job searching from a recruiter’s point of view!

[3:20] Biron’s history in being a recruiter and why he started his website, Career Sidekick and what he learned when his first website failed
[7:48] What makes a successful recruiter
[9:15] How recruiters can help you (and what NOT to rely on them for)
[14:10] What you should and shouldn’t do when reaching out to a recruiter (plus a script to use when reaching out!) and the best place to find a recruiter
[18:32] Optimizing your LI profile from a recruiter’s point of view
[24:25] Why Biron decided to quit his job as a recruiter and move to Thailand for a year

Listen here.

Action Steps to apply to YOUR journey:

How to reach out to a recruiter

  1. First, do your research. Recruiters cover certain areas or industries or sometimes both. Don’t mass email to all recruiters because not all recruiters can help you.
  2. Go to LinkedIn and search for a keyword and then recruiter. For example – Sales Recruiter. Then you can narrow the city.
  3. If you find a recruiter that covers your area and/or industry, send them this script:

Hi there,

I noticed that you recruit in _____ industry in _____ city. I am currently testing the waters and thinking of looking for a _____ position. Wondered if you’d be interested in connecting to talk about it.

Optimize your LinkedIn profile (from a recruiter’s point of view!)

  1. Have an attractive headline
  2. Make sure you have a profile picture – a headshot is preferable!
  3. Fill out all 50 skills (or as close to 50 as you can get) – these skills are used as keywords in the search
  4. Use the summary to show the personality side of your work accomplishments.
  5. Use bullet points to list your accomplishments in the experience section. Do NOT write in paragraphs.

I’m rooting for you friends!
