SUCCESS SECRET 1: DEVELOP REAL RELATIONSHIPS
Get to know your co-workers and people in the company.
Understand their role, their responsibilities, get to know them personally, and make them feel involved (aware) of the work you do. Sometimes instead of calling or sending an email, stop by their desk and have a quick chat. I have found that building relationships has really helped colleagues think of me as their partner and get me placed on awesome projects.
I love this secret! This woman has an entrepreneurial background, has worked for a consulting firm, and is a top dog. She’s super impressive. And I love that her secret is to bring things to the personal aspect. So many of us think of work as transactional only. Parts of work are transactional, but so much of work is relational. The biggest issues from work are from relationships, not skillset issues. And people who rise up through the ranks have the soft skills that help them grow through their work success and real relationships. You can’t fake relationship and succeed as a leader. You have to show up to work as a whole person and truly care about the people you work with.
One of the number one things I like to encourage people to do when they get a new job is to set up as many coffee dates as possible with your new coworkers. This helps you get to know everybody in the office you can, lets them know who you are and you learn who they are, see if you can help them and they can help you – show up to serve, and you can get an idea of who all the players are in your new office. Extrovert or introvert, this works well for us all!
When you build relationships with people, you build trust. And trust is foundational to a highly functional team. Without trust, you have a dysfunctional team.
If you are someone who wants to be successful in your career, you need to develop this soft skill of relationship in your workplace! You should do this within your department and in other departments! This helps people think of you when projects come up and opportunities happen. Building relationship is a way to be incredibly successful in your career.
Action Item: Send a coworker a Slack to thank them for the work that they’ve been doing. Write a thank you note. Grab some coffee and walk around the block. Do a combination of any or all of these. Encouragement and quality time are critical to healthy relationships in your workplace.
SUCCESS SECRET 2: WORK & LEAD FROM A PLACE OF SERVICE
Serve your boss by taking things off their plate. I would also add to serve your employees. When I work hard to make my team strong and successful, and I put them first, I also succeed.
This is the picture of servant leadership. She is in top leadership at her company. And she has learned over the years how to serve those ahead of her. You often hear me say you’re going to do one of three things in a job: make a company money, save them money, or make someone’s life easier. Serving your boss makes someone’s life easier. Make the focus here making your team successful, encouraged, and engaged. It’s not about you – it’s about the leadership over you and those you’re leading.
The definition of a servant leader is: the philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. Some of the characteristics you can develop as a servant leader are:
- Doesn’t abuse authority
- Coaching others up
- Produces Results
- Resolves Conflict
Action Item: Journal through the question, “Where have I not been serving my team well? What can I do to improve that?” And put specific actions to this!
SUCCESS SECRET 3: TAKE CHARGE & BE OBSERVANT
Figure out what is important to your boss and actively take things off their plate that helps them achieve their goals. Find problems to solve in the organization, implement a solution, and highlight your successes upward. Take charge and get things done well!
It is important to serve as we highlighted above in success secret #2. Additionally, it is so important to find problems and implement solutions. Regardless of your job description, find problems and solve those problems, then show people you solved those problems, and you’ll be given more responsibility. Take charge and get things done really well.
This can be a great place to practice leadership and to explore areas you might be interested in pivoting into. Find areas that are similar to what you’re interested in pivoting into and explore what that department does. Learn from them. Then create a project for yourself within that area to serve and to learn. Go above and beyond to do the thing.
Some tips here:
- Ask questions, but sometimes just DO
- Take note of your successes
- Don’t stay passive
- Be a curious person
Action Item: Write down your work wins each week. This will help you record the solutions you’ve implemented and grow your confidence in your work. It also makes writing your resume easier when that time comes!
SUCCESS SECRET 4: LEARN EVERYONE’S JOB
Learn how to do everyone’s job, not just yours, so that you can pitch in when things get busy for your colleagues or boss. I found even if you don’t know the full job or the complete task at hand, the effort and thought to help out is often appreciated.
This is all about providing value where you can be helpful. It helps build relationships that then help you rise through the ranks – or accomplish whatever success looks like for you! To serve in this way makes you more of an asset. And it also allows you to explore other professions and roles within your company. You can learn from someone in your department or another department, and that helps you learn from them, understand what they do, understand what motivates them, then serve them. This helps that person feel heard, seen, and builds trust between you two – making you the go-to person on the team. Which makes you irreplaceable!
Action Item: Shadow someone in your office who you feel like you could help in the long term. Learn from them.
SUCCESS SECRET 5: INVEST IN YOURSELF
Invest in yourself. You are worth it and it tells others you are worth investment, that raise, or the promotion.
Successful career woman who are $100K+ earners invest in themselves. This can take on many different forms. It is more difficult for women to do this than men. There is a narrative that we as women don’t do this because we feel like it is selfish, that others should come first. I do not think this is a way we put ourselves first – I believe it is a way of bringing others alongside you, promoting yourself and others with you.
Some of the reasons women don’t invest in themselves:
- “I should spend money on my kids or the house or….anything but me”
- It’s not the right time
- Worry “Will this be a mistake? Is this the investment worth it?”
Women who are successful in their careers invest in themselves. This can include investing in books and research. It can also look like investing in coaching that will help you get from stuck to unstuck. I’m not saying it has to be me, friend. I am saying you need to make the investment with someone if you want to move into more success in your career.
Are you being passive or proactive in your career? Invest in yourself regularly and in your career. When you do this, you are signaling to the world that you deserve to be invested in. You deserve that pay raise. You deserve that promotion. Investing in yourself sends a message to yourself and subconsciously to others that you’re worth it.
The average woman spends $4,000 on her appearance a year. Why don’t we spend the same on our careers? Investing in yourself and your professional development is the best money you can spend in your career. It’s an investment, not a cost. It will help you get unstuck. And it is worth it. You are worth it!
Questions to ask yourself: will it save me time? Will it save me money in the long run? Will it get me from point A to point B faster? If so, it’s worth the investment.
Here’s how I approach investing in myself:
- Money: I’m not going to buy the cheapest option
- Do it right and do it faster
- Formal education: not a must
Action Item: Find something you want to invest in to advance your career in the next 24 hours. Make it hurt enough that you will show up and do the work.
